If given the choice between socialism or fascism, I think most people would choose the former and rightly so.

I think even fewer people know what a fascist is.

Even though it’s actually a pretty varying topic, most people would still rightly associate "fascist" with a totalitarian & militaristic slant.

It’s a false choice, they are both authoritarian to some extent. The debate should be as to what degree of authoritarianism (or institutionalized coercion) are we willing to accept. The leftist vs. rightist, conservative vs. liberal, commie vs. fascist debates are all meaningless if we ignore this fundamental factor.
