At the end of the day, we don’t really care about human rights in other countries. National security interests and whatnot will trump that almost every time.

Even if we did care, we use aid to other countries to influence them. Or prop up the governments we want. After all, they could be a lot worse on the human rights front than they are.

But really, human rights has little to do with why we send money to them.

No, it isn’t. That’s the entire point. Egypt is supposedly a shining bastion of democracy in the Arab world. They are supposed to have free elections, freedom of speech, etc. But in reality, they do not.
