I’m so glad our government gives away so much money in foreign aid to shitholes like Egypt that don’t even respect basic human rights.
it always amazes me when people go abroad and do something that would be ok/legal in their country and then are surprised and bitch when the other country’s police disappears them for a while
Sadly, that’s true.
He wasn’t American. He was German-Egyptian and has lived in Egypt for years.
Way to talk about shit you have no fucking clue about
fixed.
it was the AUC reference that threw me.

He was still raised in Egypt.
sucks for him
Cool. Do you have any other useless shit that you want to add to this thread?

Some activists have argued that it is part of plan to make Rizk a scapegoat for allegedly smuggling items into Gaza. |
was he smuggling items into gaza?
No, he was not.
And the reason he was arrested had nothing to do with the peaceful protest march either.
It has to do with he being a journalist that is opposed to the ruling regime. There have been no official charges filed against him and last night the police raided his family’s homes.
But please, continue to excuse the oppressive regime.
|
"He is in the custody of State Security, which means illegal detention and a high probability of torture and ill treatment," Aida Seif El Dawla, who runs a group that counsels torture victims, told the Associated Press. "The fact that they are not saying where he is is very worrying." |
then he should have known the rules
obviously he was according to someone
It amazes me when ’small government’ ‘conservatives’ excuse governmental abuses
I am not excusing anything, its just dumb to go against a tyrannical government unless you are going to fight back
On the one hand, it certainly sucks for him, and yeah, Egypt is oppressive.
On the other hand, I have a hard time believing that he was somehow surprised by this. He had to have known what he was getting into.
The Egyptian government/police is full of idiots, but those who think they’re home laws apply to them abroad are even more idiotic.
you’re sure? because "I’m illegally smuggling items into gaza" isn’t the kind of thing someone puts in his christmas family newsletter.
|
And the reason he was arrested had nothing to do with the peaceful protest march either. |
Right. It may have had to do with the items he was smuggling into gaza
|
It has to do with he being a journalist that is opposed to the ruling regime. There have been no official charges filed against him and last night the police raided his family’s homes. |
Raided? The other organizer of the march didn’t say raided.
|
But please, continue to excuse the oppressive regime. |
Who is excusing them? My money’s on "both sides are in the wrong" but you’re friends with the guy so you won’t see his involvement.
Why would he be in the wrong for anything?
|
you’re sure (he’s not smuggling items into gaza)? because "I’m illegally smuggling items into gaza" isn’t the kind of thing someone puts in his christmas family newsletter. |
way to be blinded
He wasn’t smuggling anything.
|
Egyptian authorities regularly detain activists deemed critical of the government, holding many of them in undisclosed locations without charge. Rights groups have accused authorities of abusing detainees. |
THIS is why he is being held secretly. Not because he was smuggling anything.
how do you know?
ahh, he hasn’t been charged so that means he must not have been smuggling
There are numerous news pieces about this story. None except the one I posted in the first post say anything about smuggling. Please keep on being a faggot.
|

tone down teh disrespect bro. you don’t want to hurt his vagina, it will get you a nasty email from an smod.
you got a nasty email from an smod because after asking you 7 times to post by the rules you said "i won’t abide by whatever imaginary set of rules you and your worthless ilk have implemented." maybe you think that makes you a hero to the cause but really all it makes you is a dumbass.
i love it when morons act up in notoriously oppressive countries and then expect western style rights.
lew,
his family deserves answers, I’ll give you that. it’s crap that anyone in any country can be taken by the police and just disappeared. but like tizanabi said, if you live somewhere that doesn’t have western rights then holding a sign that says "I hate the govt" is going to catch a lot of breeze.

Fair enough. But why should our tax dollars go to a country that engages in such practices?
we basically pay them to stay at peace with israel.
i love israel but what a stupid reason. they should let them try to build up, attack israel, and get annihilated again
Very sad, but not unexpected. People in democratic countries (using that term loosely) don’t realize how good they have it.
Sorry to hear about your wifes’ friend. Hopefully they will simply release him, the idea of the detainment being to send a message hopefully.
Everyone bashing Egypt needs to keep in mind they have a huge problem with Islamic fundamentalists. Does not excuse the actions of the government, but at least it puts a face on what is happening.
oh and how are they secret police if we know who took your friend?
Egyptians
yo, leb, did you enjoy that phone call i posted last night?
It was hilarious
But the Israeli’s arabic was actually rather good, I was really impressed.

I think Ahmad is actually Lebanese.
It’s possible, I’m horrible when it comes to accents. I don’t even have a proper lebanese accent myself. When I went to Lebanon 10 years ago () people thought I was Armenian
BRO! Im dying to go back to Quebec. I had such a good time there in like 2003. Went to this place called baba kabab
but the upstairs was a lounge/club full of leb cuties. I need to go back. The arabi clubs in NYC arnt that great.
It always amazes me when people show a profound lack of tact and compassion and seem to think that’s something to be proud of.

god damn you’re dumb.
1) 7 times?
2) you ran to the smods with some bullshit lies about how i can’t stay away from ontopic (what a crock of shit, just look at my post history there) and how i referred to all the mods as being shitty, when in fact, i only referred to you as a shit mod
3) you’re a big gaping vagina with thin skin. you can dish it out, but when it’s served back you try to hide behind your status as a moderator. when that fails, you run to your friends and attempt to get me banned.
4) hero to the cause? what hero and what fucking cause are you talking about?
5) you mad dumb son.

I’m guessing you went to Montreal? Cote Vertu is basically a mini Lebanon
At the end of the day, we don’t really care about human rights in other countries. National security interests and whatnot will trump that almost every time.
Even if we did care, we use aid to other countries to influence them. Or prop up the governments we want. After all, they could be a lot worse on the human rights front than they are.
But really, human rights has little to do with why we send money to them.

It’s sad because I always considered him to be one of the smarter posters in OnTopic. Now that I’ve seen a few of his posts in DIAC I’ve changed my mind

At the end of the day, every country will put its own interests above everything else.
yea, we were right near McGill.
I need to go back when its a bit warmer.
i never thought that highly of him. while i don’t agree with people like joe_cool, i would at least concede he’s not dumb.
7960 is a complete fuck up in every sense of the word. i weep for his children.
Every single one of you would be quick to jump on their case if this had happened in Iran. But since Egypt is a US ally, you’re quick to condone it.
If you’re going to lie about it I’m going to call you on it. I didn’t say you can’t stay away from on topic, I said you wouldn’t stop posting shit and were proud of the fact that you weren’t going to "abide by whatever imaginary set of rules" in the forum. you being a massive ass is what what kicked it all off, not me.

I can take it as well as anyone. What’s funny is you post (paraphrased) "I disagree you dumbfuck redneck piece of shit" and I deleted it and send you a PM telling you "if you’re not going to post within the rules then don’t hit reply" and apparently you think I deleted it because you disagreed .
I don’t give a shit if you agree or disagree with me. Every day there are posts that disagree with my view. The ones that don’t break the rules are still there. And every day there are plenty of posts that agree with me that break the rules and get deleted. Doesn’t bother me a bit. If you want to post within the rules you’re more than welcome to post in on topic. If you want to be a dick then post somewhere else.
I don’t think anyone condoned it. At most people just don’t care. And shit like this does happen in Iran constantly, but hardly any threads are made since it is a given that Iran is pretty much a piece of shit.
You’re right, condoned was too strong a word. You can at least agree that had the name of the country been different, the comments would have been much more severe.
Yup. I won’t argue against that.
a direct quote from you
From his other deleted posts and now this PM he obviously doesn’t like the forum but can’t keep himself away.
again, you blatantly lied about my not being able to stay away, when in fact my post history shows i had minimal involvement in ontopic in recent months. but please, go ahead and call me out on my lies, when in fact i’m using your own words.
furthermore, way to provide context there, dumbshit. you conviniently left out the first portion of my message, which stated since there is obviously no form of decorum in on topic (as was evident by a moderator of the same forum trolling another member) i shouldn’t be held to a set of arbitrary made up rules. if you still don’t like it, you can go crying to your smod friends like a butthurt bitch.

i knew full well i was going against the rules, and it had nothing to do with a disagreement. i don’t know how much simpler i can make this, you imbecile: i didn’t knock it off because others were doing the same, if not worse. i won’t be held to a set of rules not enforced across the board.

i wasn’t aware that being a dick is a deal breaker now. if such is the case, maybe you should take a look in the mirror before whining about the behavior of others, oh wise and grand moderator of on topic.
and by the way, i’m still waiting for your explanation of how i’m somehow a "hero for the cause"? is this yet another made up fantasy in that head of yours that’s managed to manifest itself into the real world?

it’s not a blatant lie to say you can’t keep yourself away when you’re breaking the rules and say you refuse to abide by the rules.
if you’re not going to post within the rules then don’t post. if you want to post then stay within the rules. if you continue to break the rules then apparently you can’t keep yourself away……….. I’m surprised I had to explain that, even my 4th graders would have gotten it.

they’re not arbitrary made up rules. everyone follows them or their posts get deleted. hell, I even deleted one of joe_cool’s posts and I know he’s deleted a few of mine. nobody’s perfect and sometimes it takes a different set of eyes to be more objective, but eventually it all get straightened out.

In that case, I guess I have to say:
Does he have the right to be a douchebag and agitate for an open border with a terrorist organization? Sure.
Should he have known that Egypt doesn’t respect that right? Yes.
This may be the first time I’ve ever agreed with you.
jesus christ, split some more hairs in a desperate ploy to not appear like a complete idiot.

you’re just pussyhurt that i wouldn’t bow at your feet.

yeah, that pussyfication of the american thread is evident that everyone follows rules

|
ooh, I’m injured. in on topic, being a dick is a deal breaker. |
what a complete crock of shit. people have been acting liek dicks in that forum ever since main became sub only. furthermore, you and joe act like complete dicks whenever you like and you’re going to tell ME that acting out is a deal breaker? oookay. it would have some merit if it came from emfuser, but it doesn’t mean a god damn thing coming from an idiot like you
Hey so what’s your take on the Egyptian police?
lew, while I sympathize, you said yourself that he’s a journalist opposed to the regime.
isn’t this illegal in Egypt? I’m not saying I agree with the Egyptian’s governments decisions but Egypt is a sovereign country- if you go there, you run the risk of things like this imo.
|

No, it isn’t. That’s the entire point. Egypt is supposedly a shining bastion of democracy in the Arab world. They are supposed to have free elections, freedom of speech, etc. But in reality, they do not.
are you serious???
everyone knows it’s a defacto dictatorship.
I love them and commend the professionalism and sense of duty to their fellow man that they exhibit everyday. Especially to fellow Egyptians. Keep up the good work men!
Stick around. You might just find your not as dumb as you think I think you are.
I think. Fuck.
Sure you’re not thinking of somewhere else? Personally I’ve never thought that of Egypt.
Oh because no one has said it:
RELIGION OF PEACE.
Unfortunately, what do you expect to happen? Fuck Egypt. Fuck all those countries. Why we deal with back water barbarians is beyond me.
These are the type of people who have no clue about the countries they visit and automatically assume that those countries will play by American rules.
I was wrong, he’s not american. But like someone pointed out already, living in egypt he knew the rules they operate by.
|

The US pays Egypt to carry out Israels blockade of Gaza.
Mubarak is America’s puppet.
Hey…that’s where we go to get our torture on!
It’s all part of the ‘rent a dictator’ service.
