Dear Sam Gamgee

December 26, 2008

Though neither of us live in California at present…I want to give my condolences on the passing of Prop 8. It really is a travesty that on a day when we elected the first black man president….we told an entire cross section of our population that you are not equal…that you do not deserve the same rights as the rest of us.

One of my oldest and dearest friends lives in LA. I actually lived a few blocks from him in Hollywood the 2 years I spent out there. He and his partner have been together for 10 years. They’ve been talking about getting married the past couple of years. I’ve been trying to reach him since Tuesday night. I feel for him and Jim today. And I feel for the entire GLBT community.

I’m sorry my friend.

Straight but not narrow.

That was uncalled for and unnecessary

Straight but not narrow.

Hey, I like that.

In a way, I’m also disappointed in this. Just remember, Sam, the pendulum swings both ways.

It’s a saying that’s been around for years. I can’t take credit for it.
Similar proposition passed in Arizona, Prop 102, banning gay marriage. I voted against it, who am I to say who should and shouldnt be married? I dont think the government should be getting involved. To the government, marriage is pretty much just tax benefits, so what does it matter if you are giving those benefits to a man and a woman, or a man and a man, or woman and a woman? its still only 2 people you give the benefits to.

Same here, its too bad that it passed…
wow, buddyblazon to sam gamgee………this would be like Mikel apologizing to Bateman for a failed initiative to legalize steroids.
Tried doing my part but the percentages are getting closer

I wish I could say this was funny…but I don’t get it
My Sentiments as well. Here in Florida they also did the same thing. Fucking paranoid Christians. Makes me want to support the building of coliseums and the breeding of lions.

Look how close it was after the landslide in 02. Prop 8 was set to fail when it was first announced, it took millions of outside funds to pass it.

Another few cycles and it’ll be legal.
In somewhat related news, I hear an openly "transgendered" mayor got elected somewhere…

edit: might be transvestite
Transgendered mayor of Silverton, Oregon — Stu Rasmussen. And he didn’t win by a close margin, it was a 13-point victory.

I saw that on the news. Guy looks like a freakshow too, boobs and long scraggly hair, but a deep voice and man face. The populace loves him there though. He himself said that people first see him and go "wtf is up with this guy?" until he gets down to business and starts talking politics. They find out he knows his shit afterwards.

to

Another failed joke…

Thanks, man!

This is just one more small battle lost in a war that we are winning… and will eventually win.

Keep your eyes/ears tuned to the news… it’s not over yet
i’m gonna look at the silver lining. i hope this means the federal government will get involved. these decisions should not be left to states.
even the most liberal of states lean right on a lot of issues.
Hope this means faggots will finally leave CA then eventually the country itself.

Yeah, no.

ok, because you say so.

Isn’t that precisely what you did? Claiming the the most liberal states are red on a lot of issues, without any explanation or proof whatsoever?

Ok…

I hope they use their fairy dust and make your whole family gay.

Or better yet…your son ends up gay…so you can spend your life in turmoil…hating someone you love.

That would be awesome

Ok…

proof? prop 8.

next..

proof? prop 8.

next..

One amendment != "red on a lot of issues"

I find it to be ironically hilarious that minority groups voted against Prop 8. Obviously minorities don’t want "equal" rights. I think this is a good reason for white people to revert back to hating minorities.

yes, so is uhbama.

they’re opposed to gay Marriage….marriage is defined as man/woman.

McCain and uhbama were both ok with civil unions.

The term "Marriage" should be left up to churches. If a church wants to "marry" people…that’s up to them. The government should view all unions of two people as civil unions. Obviously there are laws designed to protect children and that should be kept in place.

But what is one church to tell other churches what they should and shouldn’t believe in?

And I have Mormon relatives I love dearly…but we disagree on this vehemently. Your church shouldn’t tell my church what to view as legitimate marriages.

That’s not true, actually.

McCain opposes gay unions in every way. He feels that gay unions that are legal are wrong.

Obama believes that the federal gov’t should not get involved in marriage and that individual states should decide for themselves on what to call it… civil unions or marrage, etc. He is all for allowing gay couples to enter into unions that are equal to marriage.

In my next post, please look at the link that shows the differences between the two candidates on gay related issues.

silly caucasian

also YOU said you were against prop 8 yourself..so what are you bitching about?

do you think that obama will eventually have to become involved.. since people are saying its a civil rights issue..

Good read.

Obama has hinted numerous times that he (privately) supports gay marriage. I hope that he has the courage to push for gay marriage rights on a national level, but… I suspect that it will be a long shot.

I’m afraid with the ignorant view of the populous…that is something that would have to wait until a second term. And I hope people are patient with that. Though it seems most of Americans lack foresight and would be shitty chess players.

There are certain third rails in politics. And unfortunately…I think that’s one of them right now. I think the way he’s approaching it is the smartest way someone can to be able to get into position to do something.

agreed 100%… as much as i’d like to see the federal gov’t settle this issue, its not gonna happen until late in his 2nd term. the country is already divided as it is, and it won’t help matters by driving in this other wedge.

"have to become"?

No. Obama doesn’t do anything that he doesn’t personally believe to be the right thing to do.

So, if he gets involved, it’ll be because he "wants to become" involved.

And he has expressed that he wants to get involved in gay rights issues.

I think it’ll be even further off than Obama’s second term.

I’m thinking 20 to 30 years before we get to federal gay marriage rights. I think that, until then, it’s a state by state fight.

boyfriend break up with you and now you hate all men?
I’m fucking embarassed for my state that we let this prop pass. Fuck the religious right in this country and fuck all you ignorant pieces of shit who can’t put yourselves in other people’s shoes…

that’s what Sam gets for being an environmental engineer that tries to pass himself off as an environmental scientist he has no shame
So, Melissa Ethridge has vowed to not pay California taxes…

And Governor Terminator (can’t spell his last name) has asked the Supreme Court to overrule the vote…

Looks like it’s time to break out the popcorn, because there’s going to be a lot of drama with this one!!!

Etheridge: No More Taxes!

Melissa Etheridge is vowing to stop paying her taxes now that California citizens have voted to bar gay couples from marrying.

"I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen," the 44-year-old lesbian singer-songwriter wrote in a blog post on The Daily Beast. "I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books."

Etheridge goes on to say that she’s excited about the enormous savings not paying taxes will bring her: "There is a lot I can do with the extra half a million dollars that I will be keeping instead of handing it over to the state of California. Oh, and I am sure Ellen will be a little excited to keep her bazillion bucks that she pays in taxes too."

Etheridge also questions when it became OK to legislate morality. "Gay people are born every day," she concludes. "You will never legislate that away." (The Advocate)

Calif. gov.: ‘We will maybe undo’ Prop 8

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Sunday said "we will … maybe undo" a measure passed by voters Tuesday stripping same-sex couples of the right to marry.

Proposition 8 amends the state constitution to declare that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." It came in reaction to a state Supreme Court ruling that laws prohibiting same-sex marriage violated the state constitution.

In an appearance Sunday on CNN, Schwarzenegger said the state Supreme Court might overturn Proposition 8, the Los Angeles Times reported. He also said it is likely Proposition 8 will have no effect on the estimated 18,000 same-sex marriages already recorded in California.

"It’s unfortunate, obviously, but it’s not the end," Schwarzenegger told CNN. "I think that we will again maybe undo that, if the court is willing to do that, and then move forward from there and again lead in that area."

The comments seem to represent a change in Schwarzenegger’s thinking, the Times said. In the past he has said he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman, but he has also said the matter should be decided by voters or the courts and he opposed Proposition 8.

He told backers of same-sex marriage they "should never give up."

"They should be on it and on it until they get it done," he said.

I think it’ll be even further off than Obama’s second term.

I’m thinking 20 to 30 years before we get to federal gay marriage rights. I think that, until then, it’s a state by state fight.

I think 20 to 30 years is pessimistic, personally. And I suspect that your vindication will eventually come at the hands of the Supreme Court. More to the point, I suspect most of the blue states will have overturned anti-gay legislation within 10.

So, Melissa Ethridge has vowed to not pay California taxes…

And Governor Terminator (can’t spell his last name) has asked the Supreme Court to overrule the vote…

Arnold was against gay marriage when he ran, supposedly. I think this is further evidence that politicians adopt that position out of political necessity.

yeah you got me bro. wanna fuck?

Or they realize that they know way too many gay friends and family who would be marginalized by these laws.

As "being gay" becomes less and less of a stigma, more men and women are coming out of the closet… and more families and friends are being forced to understand the gay rights struggle.

And as more and more people become educated, it makes it harder and harder to legislate bigotry.

arnold hasn’t asked the court anything, he just said the they might overrule it, if they’re willing.

he is right about this not being over though.
What I’m really wondering is how long it’s going to be before the polygamists jump in. They’re going to have a harder fight.
the funny thing about polygamists is that every argument for same-sex marriage can be used for polygamy, and gays would be hypocrites to be against it.

with that said, polygamy doesn’t bother me.

Why is that funny? What makes you think gays would be against it?

i guess i don’t really find it funny, more interesting i guess.

and before the vote came up I actually brought this idea up to a lot of my friends and said that polygamists all have the same argument as "we" do…and i was surprised at how many of them actually said that "no, it’s different" but couldn’t really give me an explanation why.
Well, gays have an easier argument. There isn’t anything stopping them from being able to be married under current law, save bigotry.

Polygamists would actually require new laws to be written (filing a joint income tax return with 4 people will be interesting, and so on). So I suppose that, in that sense, it is different. But I don’t think that means that there’s a good argument against it.
You gays just need to stop being gay. It’s that simple. It’s not the way we are intended to be as a species.

trolling: denied.

I had a discussion with Melissa Ethridge when she was at our venue during the DNC. Nothing political. Just a 5 min exchange. She’s really a very sweet person.

Cool…

I have a lot of respect for that woman… cancer survivor, fighter for equal rights, amazing artist, great mother to her children.
