New Palin debate strategy: Go after Biden

Palin’s new plan: Go after Biden

ST. LOUIS — Sarah Palin plans to go on the attack in tonight’s debate, hitting Joe Biden for what she will call his foreign policy blunders and penchant for adopting liberal positions on taxes and other issues, according to campaign officials involved in prepping her for tonight’s showdown.

The Palin camp is projecting surprising self-confidence in the pre-debate hours, despite the vice presidential nominee’s uneven — and, at some points, peculiar — performances in recent television interviews, the officials say. Top advisers to John McCain privately say Palin’s recent CBS interview was a borderline disaster, especially since it played out in several segments over several days. Tonight will be different, they say.

“This is going to finally put her back into a position where we see her like we saw her the first couple weeks,” a McCain official said. “She was herself. She was authentic, and people related to that. … Tonight, she’ll get into a rhythm. You’re going to see her in a way that you haven’t seen her yet.”

By contrast, Biden plans what an aide calls "a just-the-facts, prosecutorial approach laying out the case against McCain and defending Obama." The aide said Biden will be "keeping the eye on the target, which is McCain."

It is hard to imagine higher stakes for a vice presidential nominee on the national stage. Palin wowed even her biggest skeptics with her spirited introduction to the American people at the Republican National Convention last month. It’s been downhill since then, however. She has been largely sheltered from unscripted moments on the campaign trail. And, when she has exposed herself to improvisation or tough questioning, Palin has been criticized for offering vague and at times unusual responses.

Palin advisers say that she remains just as popular with much of the Republican base as she was a month ago when her convention speech was hailed as a home run. But her ratings have eroded in polls since then, and the advisers see the 90-minute debate at 9 p.m. ET as a chance for a swift turnaround from what they call “negativity” in her news coverage.

Yeah, good luck with that one Palin LOL.

If she goes on the offensive, Biden is going to tear her to shreds.
Republicans love it when she attacks. She’ll probably even have some fresh material this time around. I expect these to be her new lines that she repeats at rallies until November.

I’m expecting her to do decently, since it would be difficult for Biden to set her up for embarrassment, without drumming up too much sympathy for her.

If he’s smart this is what he’ll do. If he treats her like nothing more than an insignificant pest, it’ll be

At least its obvious the republican party is realizing that their little stunt is wearing off.

Me too. She’s pretty much hit rock bottom in her interviews with Couric (re: Tina Fey’s verbatim response in the SNL skit) that I don’t see her going anywhere but up when she somewhat tries to improve her public image tonight.
this is gonna be better than a major UFC fight night
Me too. Biden is great at attacking, as well; it’s just that many of his attacks are full of lies. This will be a fun debate.

Getting Biden off script could result in comedy gold

Do you really think most women will be happy if he treats her like a pest? I’m no feminist, but I do know of some women who will assume if he brushes her off then he is sexist. They both have their work cut out for them tonight.
She’s dumb if she attacks.
He’ll promptly put her in her place.

All she has to say is something like "Joe Biiiiiiden once said he’d blah blah blah in Pakistan, is that the judgment you’d trust?"
and he can counter with
"listen, I’ve been to Pakistan, I’ve talked with their leaders, I know what’s going on"

and she’ll look like a complete tool.
She can’t open any front on foreign policy. She should stick to the Republican talking points about taxes and spending, because foreign policy is not where she wants to be against Biden.

You think its better to defend herself rather than attack?

Putting Biden on teh defensive is going to make him do something stupid.
Hmm…it sounds like both parties are already coming up with excuses of why one won’t do so well. If Biden wins the debate, some Republicans will say he is sexist and a bully…if Palin wins, Democrats will say she made Biden do/say something stupid…sounds like neither can win.

You seriously think Biden is going to let her go on the offensive?

I’d hate to make it seem as though I’m following you around and bullying you, but please just stop fuckign posting about this crap. Save it for the dinner table.

He has no choice, she has focus on the path of McCain is lookign to take with positive strong statements, she has to support McCain when need be. She needs to really bring out in the open all of the major issues with Obama’s campaign and make Big Bad Joe Biden explain themselves. Sure she’s going to be in a shit storm, but if she remains composed and gives clear and complete statements rather than mumbo jumbo she’ll cause him to have to defend his position.
She is so easy to tear apart that if she goes on the offensive it’s game over.

Like someone mentioned, just talk about her complete lack of any knowledge on anything to do with foreign policy, economics, the world in general, history, things you have to read in a book, etc. and she is going to come off as the complete tool that she is.
Weak opponents should never attack, it exposes your vulnerabilities.
She needs to make it a war of attrition, and realize that everyone thinks she’s dumb, that’s the best thing she has working for her right now. If she comes out composed, poised, and calm… she’ll win hearts and votes cause people will say "look, she knows what she’s doing, she’s not stupid, the media is biased"

If she comes out swinging she’s a fool. Biden will put her in the "same old attack techniques, has Rove been coaching you?" corner so fast she won’t know what hit her. McCain attacked the entire last debate… where’d that get him?

Again, I am sorry if you got the mistaken impression that I care what you think. Follow me around all you want.

"Putting Biden on teh defensive is going to make him do something stupid."
Do you think I make this stuff up?

"Putting Biden on teh defensive is going to make him do something stupid."
Do you think I make this stuff up?

yes, and it will be a brilliant strategy for any party to admit fault by saying "they made me do it.."

do you even think before you post or just do a quick glance over shit and give a nonsense response intended to make everyone roll their eyes

Actually, Biden will win without a doubt. There is absolutely no question that he is brighter, more experienced, better versed on policy, etc, so he will win without a doubt. The question is in how the neocons will spin it so that they can pretend Palin won, and how the public judges it based on their already rock bottom expectations from palin vs normal expectations for Biden.

If Biden goes in there and does a good job, he’ll have met expectations. If Palin goes in there and doesn’t get laughed off the stage, she’ll have exceeded expectations. She can do much much much worse than him and still get praise. Unless he does exceptionally well, no one will really talk about him.

Prepare to hear this tag line on CNN and Fox… "Joe Biden showing crowds his vast foreign policy experience, but lets talk about the real surprise of tonight, governor Palin managing to walk away with three coherent sentences… let’s talk about how this will shake up the polls… Governor Palin pulling it off by giving more than two pre-rehearsed answers that made sense for the most part. I think a lot of people are really going to be impressed with this performance."

Sen. John McCain said Thursday that Sen. Barack Obama’s poll numbers are rising as the economy seems to sink “because life isn’t fair.”

“He certainly did nothing for the first few days,” McCain said Thursday on Fox News. “I suspended my campaign, took our ads down, came back to Washington, met with the House folks and got on the phone, and also had face-to-face meetings.”
