Official U.S. Economy as a Presidential campaign issue thread

Posted by bruni on September 30, 2008

While reading threads based upon the political theatre that is the U.S. presidential election on this forum, I keep stumbling upon posts that mention ‘how bad’ the economy is, and this thread is meant to educate ME and perhaps others on the subject of what our trillion dollar debt actually means, and what can the candidates do to fix it.
Stop beating around the bush in other threads, I want to know the situation, and both sides’ solutions.
Well right off the bat we all know that trickle down economics does not work.

Obama’s tax plan at it’s core is about "Neighborliness"

Posted by bruni on September 26, 2008

"If I am sitting pretty, and you’ve got a waitress who is making minimum wage plus tips, and I can afford it and she can’t — what’s the big deal for me to say, ‘I’m going to pay a little bit more.’ That is neighborliness."

Is this guy for real, is his tax policy straight out of the communist manifesto?

"From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs"

What would life be like in an ObamaNation? There’s the government sitting there watching you – watching you work – watching you go the extra mile. The government takes note of the fact that you pursued an advanced education. Then the government observes you working 50, 60 maybe 80 hours a week trying to start a business. The government watches your income as it rises. Finally at some point the government says "Enough! You now have more than you need! There are people out there who did not pursue an education like you did. There are people out there who did not work as hard and as long as you did. There are people out there who did not make the careful choices and take the risks you did. Now you have to be a good neighbor. So we’re going to take some of that money you don’t need and ’spread the wealth’, so to speak."

Obama Opens the Door to Offshore Drilling

By Jonathan Weisman
ORLANDO, Fla. — Sen. Barack Obama suggested he could accept an expansion of offshore oil drilling today if it is in a broader package of energy measures that would free the logjam on energy bills in Congress.
"My interest is in making sure we’ve got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices," Obama said in an interview with The Palm Beach Post.

Here’s a good read on windfall taxes and why it’s silly to levy them against Big Oil

What Is a ‘Windfall’ Profit?

August 4, 2008

The “windfall profits” tax is back, with Barack Obama stumping again to apply it to a handful of big oil companies. Which raises a few questions: What is a “windfall” profit anyway? How does it differ from your everyday, run of the mill profit? Is it some absolute number, a matter of return on equity or sales — or does it merely depend on who earns it?

Follow This Dime: Why Misgovernment Was No Accident in George W. Bush’s Washington

Monday 04 August 2008

by: Thomas Frank

Washington is the city where the scandals happen. Every American knows this, but we also believe, if only vaguely, that the really monumental scandals are a thing of the past, that the golden age of misgovernment-for-profit ended with the cavalry charge and the robber barons, at about the same time presidents stopped wearing beards.

Iraq oil bonanza flows to tune of $80 billion

Posted by bruni on August 19, 2008

The oil boom will give Iraq a surplus of nearly $80 billion (42 billion) by the end of this year, a US agency has concluded, raising the political pressure for a cut in American spending to help the country to recover.

High oil prices will soon give the Iraqi Government a pot of $79 billion in unspent funds, the US’s Government Accountability Office (GAO) projects in a new report to Congress. It adds that nearly $10 billion has been sitting in a US bank in New York because the Iraqi Government has been so slow in spending funds on reconstruction.

New York threatens fraud charges against Citigroup

Posted by bruni on August 08, 2008

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The office New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said on Friday it planned to bring legal action against Citigroup Inc, accusing the bank of fraudulently selling auction-rate securities and destroying documents that had been subpoenaed by the state.

In a letter of intent obtained by Reuters, the state said its five-month probe into auction-rate markets revealed the bank falsely assured customers that these securities were as liquid as cash. The securities have been difficult to sell since credit markets tightened earlier this year.
