Whatever dream you had about what America is, it isn’t that anymore. It’s gone.

Tomorrow is here. The game is over. The crisis has passed — and the patient is dead. Whatever dream you had about what America is, it isn’t that anymore. It’s gone. And not just in some abstract sense, some metaphorical or mythological sense, but down in the nitty-gritty, in the concrete realities of institutional structures and legal frameworks, of policy and process, even down to the physical nature of the landscape and the way that people live.

By STAFF REPORTERS

RUSSIA threatened to NUKE Poland yesterday as the world faced the prospect of a terrifying new Cold War.
The chilling threat was issued by a top general of Vladimir Putin amid mounting tensions over the war in Georgia.

Gen Anatoly Nogovitsy lashed out after Poland agreed to help the US create a “missile shield” over Europe. He said: “Poland is making itself a target. Such targets are destroyed as a first priority.”

I’d like to understand the logic of the typical Global Warming denier

Posted by bruni on August 21, 2008

This is how I look at it;

1. The Earth is a closed system
2. Oil is a finite resource
3. In the last 40 years the Earth’s population has doubled from 3 billion to over 6 billion.

Now you could go on and on about how much human activity is influencing the world climate, but I just don’t understand how someone can look at this picture and think that it will have no effect on anything. You may think that the only thing that matters in the world is the economy, but the economy is just a subsystem of the larger system it inhabits… the ecosystem.

Posted by bruni on August 18, 2008

The Massachusetts healthcare programme widely seen as a test case for universal health coverage in the US faces mounting opposition from doctors who say the reform is failing.

More than 250 physicians in the state have signed an open letter warning that the healthcare plan, which was signed into law in April 2006 by Mitt Romney, the former Republican governor of Massachusetts, is “already proving fiscally unsustainable”.

The surprise of recent months is not that global economic growth is slowing, but that there is any growth at all. The credit crunch of the past year has not followed the path of recent economically debilitating episodes characterised by a temporary freezing up of liquidity – 1982, 1989, 1997-8 come to mind. This crisis is different – a once or twice a century event deeply rooted in fears of insolvency of major financial institutions.

It was not the advocates of Capitalism who helped…

Posted by bruni on August 11, 2008

It was not the advocates of Capitalism who helped Wilson to whip up a reluctant peace-loving nation into the hysteria of a military crusade. It was the liberal magazine, The New Republic. Its editor, Herbert Crowley, used such arguments as: "The American nation needs the tonic of a serious moral adventure." Just as Wilson, a liberal reformer, led the United States into World War I, to make the world "safe for democracy," so Franklin D. Roosevelt, another liberal reformer, led it into World War II in the name of the "Four Freedoms."
